Let’s face it – the cheapest food at the grocery store isn’t always the healthiest choice. Filled with chemicals, preservatives, sugar and fat, these items are often tempting, but they lead us down an unhappy road to heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Buying healthier foods can be more expensive, but there are ways to cut costs and stay on budget even when shopping for healthy, fresh and organic items.

Manufacturers of organic and healthy foods often have coupons for the products, so all you have to do is find them (and remember to use them). To find free printable coupons for these items, go to your favorite search engine and type in “free online grocery coupons” and add the name of what you want to purchase. You will be surprised to find how many free printable coupons you will find.

In addition to printable online coupons, check out the weekly circulars from your local grocery stores. You will no doubt find discounts on plenty of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as lean and healthy meats such as chicken breast, turkey breast or fish. Deals on frozen vegetables also are detailed in these flyers.

Costco and other warehouse stores are another way to stock up and save on healthier items. They have great deals on bulk meats, vegetables, fruits and cereals. If you are worried that you won’t be able to use four gallons of milk or a flat of veggies or fruits before they go bad, consider shopping with a friend or sibling. You can split the food and the cost without wasting any precious food.

The local farmers market is another excellent option for the healthy-minded. You will find great deals on locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as fun items such as fresh flowers. Our local market offers deals on fresh fish, as well.

If you try to keep your grocery list filled with mostly seasonal items, you will save a bunch of money. For example, apples are a lot cheaper in October right after the big harvest. So buy them in the fall and not in March, when they are often imported and very expensive. Plan your menus around what is seasonal and on sale and you can eat healthy without breaking the bank.

Also, even if you bill edges up a couple of dollars now and then, consider the cost of sickness and disease. The cost of prescriptions to fight diabetes and high cholesterol is a lot higher than a couple of dollars a month to buy the healthiest foods possible. If you feed your body well, studies show you are much less likely to get sick (even with a cold!), so that alone is worth the price.
