The most important part of search engine optimization is the destination where prospects find your business. We know that being on the first page of Google and other search engines is one thing, but converting prospects on a professional looking website is another. Just because you are there, does not mean you are getting business. If you have a website, we recommend you make sure you have the best chance for converting prospects. How do you accomplish this? For many of the business owners with whom we work with, this is a start over phase. More than likely you have a website that looks like it was built in the early 2000s and is static and boring. Starting over is not so bad. The best thing about starting over is you probably have a domain name that has been around for a long time. That is a huge advantage for you.

There are two main ways you can obtain a website, either pay for someone to build you one or build one yourself through the hundreds of available website builders. We recommend following our tips when picking a website builder or hiring a web designer that we have featured in our SEO guide.

Tips When Choosing Website Builder Software:

  1. Going the free route is okay, but often times you are stuck with advertising on your website and limited SEO options. We recommend going with a platform that will allow you to put your own domain on the website that is not masked or forwarded. Make sure your domain name is registered to you and that you own the domain name.
  2. Make sure your website builder has newer looking themes. Starting over and putting your business in an old, outdated looking website is not the answer. More and more users are seeing and getting used to the newer styles out there, and conversions will be better for you.
  3. Make sure when you add a page to your site that it allows you to control the folder name. In this example: somedomainname.com/some-folder/, the “some-folder” should be a setting for you to control (name) when using a website builder. The reason for this is you want that folder name to contain a keyword which you are targeting, such as “exampleremodeling.com/austin-remodeling-services/”. This would be the service page for this company.
  4. Find out if you have the option to add a blog to your website. This is very important. We show you in this guide the types of posts you can make initially to get higher rankings for your website. If you find a website builder that you really like, but it does not have a blogging option, you are losing an opportunity to have your blog posts appear automatically on your website. We highly recommend making sure your website and blog are integrated seamlessly.
  5. Your home page should act as your lead generation portal. Make sure the themes available include an easy to see lead generation or opt-in form on the home page. This feature is very important. It allows you the ability to offer downloadable coupons, give tips, or provide the information your prospects would want before giving you their contact information. This form also needs to provide you with the ability to autorespond when prospects sign-up on your site. This is very important to maximizing your conversions, and in this guide we will show you many examples of how easy it is to offer something of value for free to your visitors.
  6. Make sure the user interface is comfortable to look at. Hopefully you are choosing a system that allows you to control all of your web activity in one place, since you will be spending a great deal of time using the system. Facebook and Twitter, for example, make it easy for you to spend time on their site with the look and feel of their application.
  7. Find out what kind of training your designer provides. With every system there is ramp-up time using the application. Make sure you have access to immediate training options such as videos, articles or live support.

Tips When Choosing a Web Designer:

  1. Avoid freelancers that you have no way of verifying their expertise. It is easy to see if they can do what they say by looking at examples they provide. Check at the bottom of those examples for a link to their site; if there is one, you can be fairly sure they actually created the site.
  2. Make sure there is more than one person you can contact regarding your project. Nothing is worse than relying on a single contact who can quickly get backed up and not return phone calls.
  3. Confirm that they are going to build your website in HTML with table-less CSS that is compliant with all browsers.
  4. Make sure they are capable of performing proper on-page optimization. Tell them you want your inside pages, “About Us, Services, Product, etc.”, to be index files in folders. You want your links to look like this “somedomainname.com/keyword-foldername/”. We used an example earlier in this guide such as: “exampleremodeling.com/austin-remodeling-services/”
  5. Tell your web designer suggested keywords on which you want your on-page optimization to be focused. You can search yourself for suggested keywords to provide them at http://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. You are looking for keywords that have low competition and generate the most searches. Later in this guide we explain in more detail.
  6. Also tell your web designer to include alt tags, anchor tags, title tags and proper internal linking for each of your pages.
  7. Make sure they name all your image file names with proper keywords for further placement in image directories like Google Images.
  8. Make sure that this includes a content management system and blogging system so you can edit pages, create new pages, add posts, etc. There are several out there: WordPress, Joomla and many web design companies have their own to provide as well. Of course our internet marketing software includes this.
  9. A good way to find a web designer is by clicking on the “designed by” or web design company link on a website that you like or have seen online.
  10. Pricing will be all over the map, especially if you look for web designers on Craigslist. As a web development company we will provide a basis for comparison in this guide. We charge $500 for a custom website that is fully optimized for up to 6 Keywords that is then installed into our proprietary content management and lead generation system. Our platform comes with a designed blog and landing page system.
